“The Voice—A Symposium on Mavis Staples”

Dive into in the influence and impact of Mavis Staples—1999 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, as a member of the Staples Singers—with a free educational event titled “The Voice: A Symposium on Mavis Staples” today (Sept. 19) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in Tinkham Veale University Center, Ballroom A.

The following panelists will participate in the event:

  • Mark Burford, an associate professor at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and an expert in 20th century African-American popular music;
  • Rob Bowman, author of Soulsville U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records;
  • Maureen Mahon, an associate professor at New York University and author of Right to Rock: The Black Rock Coalition and the Cultural Politics of Race; and
  • Jessica Edwards, whose documentary Mavis! will be part of the full Mavis Staples Day celebration at the Rock Hall Saturday, Sept. 21.
