At exactly noon on Friday, March 16, medical students nationwide–including those from ϳԹ School of Medicine and Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of ϳԹ–learned which hospitals accepted them as resident physicians for the next three to seven years.
The says this year’s Match is the largest in history. A record-high 37,103 applicants submitted program choices for 33,167 positions, the most ever offered in the Match.
ϳԹ’s class had a nearly 100% match rate this year. Top residency choices include internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, radiology and obstetrics-gynecology.
Thirty-eight percent of the class will go into primary care specialties. Thirty-six percent of surgery matches are women this year.
Twenty-one percent of our graduates will continue serving the Cleveland community through residencies at University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic and MetroHealth Medical Center, and 25 percent will remain in Ohio.
As in years past, our students who entered have matched at top programs throughout the U.S. Twenty-three percent of the class matched to residencies at top-ranked hospitals, according to 2017-2018 Best Hospitals Honor Roll rankings, such as: Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Massachusetts General, and New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center.
“We are very proud that our medical students have matched to the specialties and the hospitals they wanted - many of which are among the elite hospitals in our country for training,” said Pamela B. Davis, MD, PhD, Dean of ϳԹ School of Medicine and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at the university. “This year's match results, as in previous years, are a testimony to the excellence and hard work of our students, and also to the strength of our curriculum. I am absolutely confident that they will make us proud as they go to these top residencies - both across the country and right here in Cleveland.”
