When Matthew Canel, a two-time 窪蹋勛圖厙 graduate in mechanical engineering, joined , he was handed a list.
On it were long-term priorities for the organization, such as restoring their 70 mm projection capabilities, replacing shelves, and creating an endowment, among other goals.
We were able to complete that list of priorities in a little over two semesters, said Canel, the outgoing business manager for 窪蹋勛圖厙 Film Society. No one told me it was a five-year list.
The idea of having an endowment had been floating around for more than 10 years. 窪蹋勛圖厙 Film Society members knew if they could get the ball rolling, they could raise the $25,000 needed to make it happen. They began fundraising on Giving Tuesday last year, raising almost $2,000 in three days.
In the months following, Canel organized a for the Film Societys 50th anniversaryand, after 10 days, raised $24,000. As of today, Canel has helped raise $27,000 for the groups endowment, which will support programming, student projectionist training, and long-held traditions, such as the Science Fiction Marathon.
It was incredibly exciting to see the support from everyone, said Canel. While we knew that we would see some support, we were surprised by the speed at which the donations came in, many from the familiar faces of alumni and community who were a part of the group or who have been long-time attendees to the Science Fiction Marathon.
As 窪蹋勛圖厙 and 窪蹋勛圖厙 Film Society take part in Day of Giving, June 8, Canel wants to remind the 窪蹋勛圖厙 community that no amount of support is too small.
The support we receive goes towards large projects and helps to offset large expenditures such as equipment repairs and replacements, he said. That support will help ensure that the Film Society can continue to show movies and keep the art of 35 mm and 70 mm film projection alive for future generations.
