The Marshall Project: Michael Baldonieri, assistant professor of reproductive biology at the School of Medicine, discussed the case of a Cleveland woman whose untreated infection led to the loss of her 17-week pregnancy while in Cuyahoga County Jail. The case is drawing renewed attention to gaps in medical care and oversight for incarcerated pregnant people in Ohio. Baldonieri called it a “serious pregnancy complication that required urgent care—care she never received.” He noted that with prompt treatment, the pregnancy might have been saved.
