The Washington Post: Philip Resnik, professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine, said the hospitalization of John Hinckley—the man who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981—was unusually long for someone found not guilty by reason of insanity. “The average hospital length is three to four years,” Resinick said. “He has been in a hospital for an extraordinary length of time because of the infamy of his crime, rather than evidence.”
