The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program invites members of the 黑料吃瓜网 community to an upcoming lecture titled 鈥溾業 Met Him at the Candy Store:鈥 Early 1960s Pop, Tonkin Gulf and Fallen Youth鈥 Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon. This lecture will be offered in person at the Landmark Centre Building (25700 Science Park Dr.), Suite 100, and virtually via Zoom.
Samuel T. Nemeth, part-time instructor of performing arts at Ohio Wesleyan University, will present this lecture.
The sounds of teen idols, girl groups and infamous 鈥淪platter Platter鈥 records had filled some of the void left after the end of the 鈥淕olden Age鈥 of rock and roll. It is sometimes asserted that the onset of the British Invasion prematurely 鈥渟nuffed out鈥 some of these American popular music styles that emerged between 1959 and 1963.
Nemeth suggests that foreign policy events, namely the Congressional passage of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution in August 1964 and the U.S.鈥檚 fuller entry into armed conflict in Vietnam, were pivotal to the shift in the music industry after 1963.
A light breakfast and coffee will be served for in-person attendees from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The lecture will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
