CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH: BROWSE SAFELY WITH TIPS FROM [U]TECH | October 16, 2018
STORY BY: EDITORIAL STAFF
This month, University Technology’s ([U]Tech) Information Security Office is marking National Cybersecurity Awareness Month by sharing information on different facets of cybersecurity. In its 15th year, the month-long awareness campaign promotes the importance of protecting against hackers, online scammers and other cyber-threats. This week, the Information Security Office is focusing on safe web browsing. Four steps to browse securely, according to the SANS Institute, are:
  1. Watch out for browser warnings: Is there a warning banner about the website you are trying to visit? Avoid the site and go to a different one to find the information you need.
  2. Check for encryption: Find the padlock icon or HTTPS next the website address to ensure information is protected in transit.
  3. Get authorized: Before installing any software, plugins, add-ons or extensions, check [U]Tech policies and procedures to ensure it is authorized or ask the [U]Tech Service Desk at help@case.edu, 216.368.HELP (4357) or .
  4. Once installed, keep it updated: Make sure that your browser and plugins always have the latest patches and updates.
