As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re looking back on the first Black History Week at ϳԹ. Hosted by the Afro American Society, “Black Renaissance Week” was held in February 1969 and featured such events as poetry readings, a gospel music concert, seminars on education and economics, and more.
A concert—the Soul Symposium—closed out the week and featured a performance by The O’Jays and openers the New Directions.
Stephanie Tubbs—who would go on to become the first African American woman to serve the state of Ohio in Congress—and Mike Sutton co-chaired the events.
