EVENT INFORMATION:
The original topic for this month — "Why should we trust science?" — will be postponed due to an emergency in Prof. Haufe's family. Instead, we will hear three ϳԹ scientists discuss the 2019 Nobel Prizes in science, including some background on the laureates and the significance of their work.
Prof. Dan Scherson of the ϳԹ Dept. of Chemistry will discuss the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which was awarded to Stanley Whittingham, John Goodenough, and Akira Yoshino for their contributions to the development of lithium-ion batteries.
Prof. Ben Monreal of the ϳԹ Dept. of Physics will discuss the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics, which was awarded to Didier Queloz and Michel Mayor for their 1995 discovery of 51 Pegasi b, the first confirmed extrasolar planet, and to James Peebles for developments in theoretical cosmology.
Finally, Science Café's own Prof. Cynthia Beall (of the ϳԹ Dept. of Anthropology) will discuss the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which was jointly awarded to William G. Kaelin, Jr., Peter J. Ratcliffe, and Gregg L. Semenza for their work describing “how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability”.
