Science Café Cleveland presents

Science Goes Down The Drain

JANUARY 9, 2017

FEATURING:

Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells

Deputy Director, Watershed Programs, Northeast Ohio Sewer District

Matthew Scharver

Senior Team Leader, Watershed Programs, Northeast Ohio Sewer District

EVENT INFORMATION:

When we shower and flush our toilets in cities, this waste combinesÌýwith storm water and goes into the sewer system. But as populations and citiesÌýgrow, theseÌýaging systems have come under considerable strain that haveÌýresulted in major problems such as flooded streets and basements during largeÌýdownpours,ÌýsendingÌýuntreated sewage containingÌýbacteria,Ìýpathogens, and trash to waterways such as Doan Brook, Rocky River, Big CreekÌýand other local waterways as well as LakeÌýErie. The enhanced awareness of theÌýimportance of creating healthy green environments has resulted in communitiesÌýacross the country proposing a range ofÌýsolutions to this waste problem andÌýremaking urban spaces in the process.Ìý
Ìý
The Fairhill/MLKÌýGreen Infrastructure Project represents a case study of one type of solution toÌýthis national problem. The Northeast Ohio Regional SewerÌýDistrict is retoolingÌýinfrastructure in a 63 acre drainage area stretching from Larchmere BoulevardÌýto Fairhill Road on the City's east side to remove over 14.3ÌýmillionÌýgallons, in a typical storm event year, of storm water from the combined sewerÌýsystem.
Ìý
In this Science Cafe Cleveland,ÌýKyle Dreyfuss-WellsÌýand Matthew Scharver of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will discussÌýthe science and technology behind the design and function of theÌýFairhill/MLK GreenÌýInfrastructure Project and how it fits into theÌýgreening of Northeast Ohio.
