EVENT INFORMATION:

When we shower and flush our toilets in cities, this waste combines听with storm water and goes into the sewer system. But as populations and cities听grow, these听aging systems have come under considerable strain that have听resulted in major problems such as flooded streets and basements during large听downpours,听sending听untreated sewage containing听bacteria,听pathogens, and trash to waterways such as Doan Brook, Rocky River, Big Creek听and other local waterways as well as Lake听Erie. The enhanced awareness of the听importance of creating healthy green environments has resulted in communities听across the country proposing a range of听solutions to this waste problem and听remaking urban spaces in the process.听
听
The Fairhill/MLK听Green Infrastructure Project represents a case study of one type of solution to听this national problem. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer听District is retooling听infrastructure in a 63 acre drainage area stretching from Larchmere Boulevard听to Fairhill Road on the City's east side to remove over 14.3听million听gallons, in a typical storm event year, of storm water from the combined sewer听system.
听
In this Science Cafe Cleveland,听Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells听and Matthew Scharver of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will discuss听the science and technology behind the design and function of the听Fairhill/MLK Green听Infrastructure Project and how it fits into the听greening of Northeast Ohio.
