EVENT INFORMATION:
The story of breast听cancer treatment is one that swings between hope and disappointment. While听mammography and chemotherapy听produced a dramatic 24% decrease in breast cancer听mortality between 1990-2000, this positive trend in survival plateaued over the听last听decade, and metastatic breast cancer remains the 2nd听most听prevalent cancer-related killer of women in the United States, annually听accounting for more than 40,000 deaths and 227,000 new case of invasive breast听cancer.
听
In discussing the听treatment of breast cancer, Hippocrates stated that 鈥淭hose diseases that听medicines do not cure are cured by the knife.听Those that the knife does not听cure are cured by fire. Those that fire does not cure must be considered听incurable.鈥� Metastatic disease is听typically incurable and highly resistant to听contemporary 鈥渇ire鈥� treatments and chemotherapies, leading legendary cancer听biologist Dr.听Robert A. Weinberg to pronounce metastasis as 鈥淭he Last Frontier听in Cancer Research.鈥�

The presentation听will explore several critical issues related to breast cancer metastasis, such听as: Why do breast cancers metastasize and听often remain dormant in a 鈥榮uspended听state of animation鈥� for many years before awakening as incurable lesions? Is听there a logical听evolution to treatment resistance, and if so, can we use this听knowledge to personalize patient treatments? Are there co-conspirators that听aid听and abet breast cancer cells during metastasis, and if so, can their听inactivation by novel treatments improve the overall survival of听breast cancer听patients?
