EVENT INFORMATION:
The story of breastcancer treatment is one that swings between hope and disappointment. Whilemammography and chemotherapyproduced a dramatic 24% decrease in breast cancermortality between 1990-2000, this positive trend in survival plateaued over thelastdecade, and metastatic breast cancer remains the 2ndmostprevalent cancer-related killer of women in the United States, annuallyaccounting for more than 40,000 deaths and 227,000 new case of invasive breastcancer.
In discussing thetreatment of breast cancer, Hippocrates stated that “Those diseases thatmedicines do not cure are cured by the knife. Those that the knife does notcure are cured by fire. Those that fire does not cure must be consideredincurable.” Metastatic disease istypically incurable and highly resistant tocontemporary “fire” treatments and chemotherapies, leading legendary cancerbiologist Dr.Robert A. Weinberg to pronounce metastasis as “The Last Frontierin Cancer Research.”
The presentationwill explore several critical issues related to breast cancer metastasis, suchas: Why do breast cancers metastasize andoften remain dormant in a ‘suspendedstate of animation’ for many years before awakening as incurable lesions? Isthere a logicalevolution to treatment resistance, and if so, can we use thisknowledge to personalize patient treatments? Are there co-conspirators thataidand abet breast cancer cells during metastasis, and if so, can theirinactivation by novel treatments improve the overall survival ofbreast cancerpatients?
