"Ice Crystal Icing in Turbofan Engines May Explain Loss of Power Events"

EVENT INFORMATION:
Turbofan engines powering commercial aircraft have been听found to sometimes experience temporary loss of power.听While this phenomenon is听still not fully understood, one important clue is that these events seem to听occur while听operating at high altitudes in the vicinity of convective storms,听and this suggests that icing may be a factor.
听
It is suspected that the aircraft are flying through听nearly invisible clouds of ice crystals outpouring from the听convective storm听cells. The theory is that ice crystals are ingested by the engines which causes听ice to build up on听hardware that is normally significantly warmer than freezing听temperature.听听The ice buildup leads to an听inflight,听uncommanded loss of power event.听听听This phenomenon is termed 鈥榠ce crystal icing' and is suspected as the听cause of听over 250 loss of power revenue service events worldwide.听

NASA Glenn is the only facility in the world to have听successfully tested a full scale engine at simulated high altitude听ice crystal听icing conditions and in this talk I will discuss how we are doing this and what听we have learned so far.
