Science Café Cleveland presents

"Ice Crystal Icing in Turbofan Engines May Explain Loss of Power Events"

NOVEMBER 11, 2013

FEATURING:

Michael J. Oliver, Ph.D.

Aerospace Research Engineer, Engine Icing

NASA Glenn Research Center, Icing Branch

EVENT INFORMATION:

Turbofan engines powering commercial aircraft have beenÌýfound to sometimes experience temporary loss of power.ÌýWhile this phenomenon isÌýstill not fully understood, one important clue is that these events seem toÌýoccur whileÌýoperating at high altitudes in the vicinity of convective storms,Ìýand this suggests that icing may be a factor.
Ìý
It is suspected that the aircraft are flying throughÌýnearly invisible clouds of ice crystals outpouring from theÌýconvective stormÌýcells. The theory is that ice crystals are ingested by the engines which causesÌýice to build up onÌýhardware that is normally significantly warmer than freezingÌýtemperature.ÌýÌýThe ice buildup leads to anÌýinflight,Ìýuncommanded loss of power event.ÌýÌýÌýThis phenomenon is termed ‘ice crystal icing' and is suspected as theÌýcause ofÌýover 250 loss of power revenue service events worldwide.Ìý
Ìý
NASA Glenn is the only facility in the world to haveÌýsuccessfully tested a full scale engine at simulated high altitudeÌýice crystalÌýicing conditions and in this talk I will discuss how we are doing this and whatÌýwe have learned so far.
