Our fascination with the possibility of life on Mars has never been greater than it is right now, with fantastic new images and data galvanizing laypeople worldwide- yet public opinion remains informed more by science fiction and hype than fact. A careful look at historical and modern research on the possibility of life on Mars reveals just how little we know about the Red Planet and its history and offers surprising insights into life on Earth and elsewhere.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Ralph Harvey is an Associate Professor of Geological Sciences at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.ÌýÌý He has been the Principal Investigator and field team leader for the US Antarctic Search for Meteorites program since 1991. He is an author or co-author on diverse topics in the planetary sciences, ranging from micrometeorites to icesheet dynamics to the history of Mars. He is a principal investigator in NSF's Office of Polar Programs as well as NASA's Cosmochemistry and Mars Fundamental Research programs, and a frequent contributor to NASA's Mars Exploration Program.ÌýÌý He was recently a member of the preliminary examination team for the STARDUST sample return mission, and both an asteroid and an Antarctic mountain now bear his name.ÌýÌý
